Volunteer initiatives

Princeton Student Climate Initiative (PSCI) is collaborating with community organizations and student groups to create and spread word about environmental volunteering opportunities.

We’re excited to launch out first batch of opportunities! If you are interested in any of them be sure to click the link and sign up on MyPrincetonU and any other required form that’s included in the posting.

We plan to post additional opportunities throughout the semester, so be sure to check for the updates on My PrincetonU, the PSCI website, and the PACE website.

For those who filled out our survey we will be taking your suggestions for volunteer opportunities starting the 2023 Fall Semester. Keep an eye out for more opportunities, and if you want to see a certain type of volunteering project or organization fill out the form here.

Update: Thank you to everyone who has filled out last year’s volunteering inquiry survey! We saw the results and made sure these opportunities reflect your interests. This time we are starting a new list that includes continuous opportunities that you can refer to at any time. We will be posting new opportunities every couple of months or so, keep an eye out for October/November’s edition; it may just feature a group that you haven’t seen thus far. We hope you’re just as excited as we are!

If you have any questions you can email either Frida Ruiz at fr2168@princeton.edu or Ash Reddy at ar3654@princeton.edu

The Watershed Institute (3 Opportunities)

Streamwatch Monitor

Position Details:

The Watershed Institute is looking for volunteers to join their stream monitoring team. Two of the teams are Chemical Action Team (CAT) and Biological Action Team (BAT).

StreamWatch CAT volunteers monitor one weekend per month year-round and attend a mandatory Quality Assurance session in the Watershed Lab every year. Volunteers test six basic water quality parameters: water and air temperature, phosphates, nitrates, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. The results are analyzed and reported to the public through our quarterly subwatershed report cards, municipal report cards, and online. Data is also submitted to the EPA’s Water Quality Exchange.

StreamWatch BAT volunteers monitor the populations of organisms called macroinvertebrates. Water quality ratings are based on the abundance of various species and their sensitivity to pollutants. If the stream is healthy, a diverse macroinvertebrate population can be found in a relatively small sample of water. A reduction in their numbers may indicate a high level of pollution. Sampling is conducted twice a year in the spring and fall. Once a year the organisms are identified to family level in the Watershed Lab by BAT volunteers. The other samples collected that year will be sent to a certified lab for identification to the genus level.

Additional Details:
